What is periodontitis and how to treat it?

Thanks to advertising about caries, even children know. But periodontal disease is still a mystery to most. This disease is not given enough attention and they are rarely diagnosed. This is indicated by statistics – 80% of the population suffers from this disease.

Causes of periodontitis, its signs and stages

The main reason for the occurrence and development of periodontitis is bacteria that are contained in plaque on the surfaces of the teeth due to poor maintenance of oral hygiene. Therefore, the basis for successful treatment and further prevention of the occurrence of diseases is optimal and high-quality oral hygiene.

The main signs of the existence of periodontal diseases:

• Bad breath with constant hygiene;
• Bleeding when brushing your teeth or while eating;
• The formation of plaque, deposits and stones;
• Prolapse of the gingival margin, exposure of the neck or roots of the teeth;
• Swelling and redness of the gums, unpleasant and painful sensations;
• The movement of seemingly healthy-looking teeth.

You should know that in most cases periodontitis is not accompanied by pain. Therefore, if you notice the above symptoms, be sure (preferably as soon as possible) consult a periodontist.

Complexity and stages of periodontal disease

• Gingivitis is superficial inflammation that can usually be treated easily, and is different than periodontitis in that bone loss has not occurred;
• Mild periodontitis – the destruction of the bone and tissues that hold the teeth in the jaw is insignificant;
• Medium – more significant destruction of the bone, which can lead to exposure of the gums, threatens tooth loss;
• Severe – the destruction of more than half of the bone holding the tooth can lead to a strong exposure of the roots of the teeth, their mobility and subsequent loss.

Effective treatment of gum disease of varying complexity

If the correct and adequate treatment of periodontitis is not done in a timely manner, it will progress, which over time will simply lead to the loss of healthy teeth. In addition, the infection that exists in the oral cavity can penetrate the body, leading to the onset and progression of a number of diseases, in particular, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, prematurity of the fetus and more.

Successful and effective treatment of periodontitis requires close cooperation between the doctor and the patient and an integrated approach (if necessary, therapeutic, orthodontic, surgical and orthopedic treatment). It consists of the following main steps:

• Non-surgical – diagnostics, deep removal of dental deposits, stones;
• Surgical – performed if necessary;
• Maintenance therapy – follow-up visits to the dentist for life.

In our Center for Practical Dentistry, each patient at the first appointment must undergo an initial periodontal diagnosis – PSR test. If the test shows problems, a more advanced and detailed diagnosis is performed. As a result, a periodontal scan with a series of X-ray photographs and a detailed history is compiled.
